The Az-Zour North gas-fired combined cycle power and water plant is located at Az-Zour, approximately 100km south of Kuwait City.
The power and water plant was built as part of the Az-Zour North Independent Water and Power Project (IWPP).
Listed on Boursa Kuwait, Shamal Az-Zour Al-Oula Power and Water Company K.S.C.P. was founded for the development and operation of Az-Zour North One Power and Water plant.
Az-Zour North One Power and Water Plant is the first privately-owned gas-fired combined cycle power and water desalination plant in Kuwait.
During the last ten years, Kuwait’s power consumption has doubled driven by a fast population growth rate, which counts today just over four million people.
The Company commenced full commercial operations in November 2016 and currently supplies about 10% of Kuwait's installed power generation capacity and 20% of the country’s installed water desalination capacity.
The operation of Az-Zour North Plant is carried out by Shamal Az-Zour Al-Oula together with dedicated Operation and Maintenance Company "AZN O & M" Company.
AZN O&M Company adheres to strict, environmental operating procedures during the operation and maintenance of Az-Zour North Power and Water Plant.
The 1,500MW Az-Zour North Power plant is based on combined cycle gas turbine technology using heat recovery steam generators and steam turbines. The turbines generate electricity using natural gas as primary fuel and fuel oil (gas oil) as back-up fuel. Fuel requirements of the plant are fulfilled by MEW.
The desalination plant comprises multiple-effect distillation (MED) units capable of producing 107 million imperial gallons per day (MIGD) (486,400m³/d) of drinking water, which is equivalent to 20% of Kuwait’s installed water treatment capacity.
